Catch This Beat - The Rocksteady Years 1966-1968 [Island Records]

Island Records, la compañía discográfica fundada por el inquieto Chris Blackwell, cumple este año cinco décadas de andadura musical. El sello que puso a la música jamaicana en el mapa, también es culpable de haber dado a conocer a Tom Waits, U2, Traffic, Cat Stevens o los B52s y los fastos que se planean, a comenzar el próximo mes de mayo, son tremendamente suculentos.

Blackwell fundó el sello en Kingston, en Jamaica. Educado en el Reino Unido, pero con residencia en Jamaica por motivos laborales de su padre, Blackwell quedó asombrado por el potencial artístico que pudo encontrar en la música jamaicana de la época: rocksteady y ska en sus fases más primitivas, con una frescura solamente comparable a los primeros momentos del rock and roll. A principios de los sesenta, Blackwell traslada el negocio al Reino Unido, centro neurálgico de la escena musical y país receptor de miles de inmigrantes jamaicanos, cuya tabla de salvación fue la música que se experimentaba en su país de origen.

Blackwell recuerda sus inicios: “Cuando grabé el primer disco de Island, en 1959 y en el estudio de Federal Records, en Kingston (Jamaica), no tenía ni idea de lo que todo ello podría significar en mi vida personal y empresarial. Ha sido un honor y un privilegio haber podido trabajar con algunos de los mejores artistas de nuestro tiempo. Siempre ha sido mi intención grabar discos que superen la prueba del tiempo”

De hecho, Island ha sido reconocida como la compañía discográfica independiente con más éxito en la historia de la música popular, aunque acabó siendo adquirida por Polygram Records, parte actual del Grupo Musical Universal.

En una industria dominada por gran cantidad de hombres productores, Sonia Pottinger surgio durante el rocksteady y el reggae en los ultimos años de la decada de los 60 para hacer canciones dignas de competición. Este recopilacion tiene una caracteristica basica la cual son clásicos como the Gaylads' "Hard to Confess," the Melodians' "Little Nut Tree" and "Swing and Dine," Ken Boothe's "Say You," and Monty Morris', como reflejo de la amplitud de Pottinger el disco también incluye una primera parte por el DJ Charlie Ace un Rude Boy de la banda The Valentines y otras de calipso con el trabajo de Patsy and the Basie Band. Con sólo unas pocas pistas superpuestas, esta colección de obras como un buen complemento a Heartbeat igualmente impresionante, a disfrutar.
